What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is use of one’s hands or an instrument to restore a joint into its proper position or to restore joint range of motion that has been lost. It is done with a high velocity and low amplitude thrust (HVLA), meaning it is fast but gentle and generally very comfortable. Adjustments affect the surrounding nervous system in a very positive way by relieving inflammation that puts pressure and stress on your neural tissues, making them function much better. This leads to decreased pain, improved sensation, strength and reflexes of the affected muscles.
What Training do Chiropractors Have?
Chiropractors are licensed neuromusculoskeletal doctors. After completing an undergraduate degree, DCs will attend a 4 year graduate program to obtain their Doctor of Chiropractic degree from an accredited university. This training includes extensive education and experience not only with adjusting techniques and neuromuscular rehabilitation, but also in pharmacology, biology, chemistry, pathology, microbiology, and anatomy and physiology, with specific emphasis on neuroanatomy. To become licensed in the state of Hawaii, Chiropractors must pass 5 national board exams.
What Will Happen at my First Appointment?
Once you make an appointment, initial intake paperwork will be emailed to you to fill out and have ready for your first visit. Your doctor will first go over your current symptomatic and past health history with you. Next, your doctor will conduct a relevant physical exam to determine the cause of your current symptoms. Once the cause has been ascertained, an appropriate treatment program will be developed and discussed with you. The treatment will be whatever you need. Whether that includes an adjustment, soft tissue therapy, rehab, or all the above will depend on the results of the history and physical exam. After treatment, payment will be taken in full and follow up visit(s) will be scheduled if necessary.
